Have your utility bills been rising lately? If so, your HVAC system may be partially to blame. In this blog, Amber Air Conditioning, Inc. shares some common HVAC mistakes homeowners make that may be costing you money.
Not Replacing the Air Filter — The air filter traps indoor contaminants like dust and microorganisms. Eventually, however, air filters get clogged, and therefore need to be replaced (or cleaned, if your HVAC system has reusable air filters). Clogged air filters can restrict airflow through the ducts, which increases the required output from your HVAC system. This results in higher energy consumption, as well as higher energy bills. Air filters need to be replaced every three months, or as often as once a month during seasons of heavy use.
Neglecting the Ductwork — Trying to heat or cool a room with air that has to move through leaky ducts is like trying to fill a bucket with a leaky hose; the bucket will eventually get filled, but not before you waste a lot of water doing so. Ducts need to be cleaned and resealed every three to five years. Well-maintained ducts keep your heating and air conditioning systems from becoming overtaxed, and help get heated and conditioned air to where you need it.
Not Upgrading Your Thermostat — You’re missing out on the benefits of a programmable thermostat if you’re still using a traditional one in your home. If you and your family follow a set schedule, a programmable thermostat will enable you to create weekday settings that help reduce air conditioning and heating output when everyone is away from the house.
Not Addressing Refrigerant Leaks — Refrigerant isn’t like fuel; it doesn’t run out. A leak-free air conditioning system can provide cooled air efficiently for years. However, refrigerant lines can become damaged due to wear and tear, resulting in leaks. A noticeable effect of leaking refrigerant is decreased output, which drives the HVAC system to consume more energy to compensate. Leaking refrigerant may also cause burns or even lung damage.Call Amber for Your HVAC Needs
