Why Your HVAC System Has Poor Airflow

Poor airflow can affect your HVAC system in many ways, from reduced output to increased system workload. In today’s post, Amber Air Conditioning Inc. takes a look at some of the common causes of poor HVAC airflow, and what you can do to improve it.

Dirty Air Filters

Air filters capture dust and other particles that would otherwise recirculate in your home. Air filters typically get filled to capacity after three months, sometimes sooner during seasons of continuous use. Fortunately, air filters are user-replaceable, which means you don’t have to schedule a service appointment just to replace them — just make sure you’re buying the same size. Mini-split systems typically have washable air filters that can be easily detached for cleaning.

Leaky Air Ducts

Leaks in the air ducts can dramatically reduce the amount of air that gets delivered to the rooms in your home. Imagine a punctured garden hose and how much water is wasted when you continue to use it. Air ducts should be inspected by an air conditioning repair technician every five years or so. There are several methods to fix leaky air ducts, from aerosol sealant to expanding foam.

Blocked Vents and Registers

Insufficient clearance around air vents and registers can disrupt airflow in your room. Ideally, there should be at least six inches of clearance between them and the curtains and the backs of furniture. When buying or rearranging furniture and inform whomever’s moving the furniture to mind the vents and registers.

Incorrectly-Sized Air Ducts

Like air conditioners and heaters, air ducts need to be properly sized to ensure efficient airflow. Ducts that are too narrow can cause bottlenecking; too large and the HVAC system’s air handler may end up being insufficient. While the problem of undersized air ducts can be eliminated by working with HVAC professionals, it may get overlooked in situations that involve home additions, where the additional space may render the existing HVAC system undersized. A DIYer may decide to replace or repair their air ducts and overlook crucial details like proper duct sizing.
