Why Does My Furnace Keep Blowing Its Fuse?

If your furnace keeps blowing its fuse, the problem could possibly be resulting from worn or faulty components, loose wires or excessive dirt. In order to prevent further damage to your HVAC system, it’s important to identify the main issue and have it fixed as soon as possible.

In this article, Amber Air Conditioning Inc. shares more details about the most common causes of blown fuses in furnaces.

Faulty components. If the fuse keeps blowing and you’re also hearing strange sounds coming from your furnace, the problem could be traced back to any of these components:

  • A malfunctioning blower motor that draws too much power and causes a short.

  • A starting capacitor that’s failing and causing intermittent electrical issues.

  • A valve that doesn’t open and close properly, which can cause the furnace to overheat or not heat at all.

  • A transformer that fails to convert the furnace to the correct voltage.

Call in a qualified technician to have a look at any of these components. Much like air conditioning repairs, it’s best to leave heating repairs to HVAC professionals.

Loose wires. Your furnace naturally causes vibrations when it’s operating. These vibrations can loosen some internal wires, which could then result in a short. Your technician should be able to locate and repair or replace loose wiring. But to ensure that your furnace wires are tight, be sure to have your unit inspected and tuned up regularly.

Dirt. Failure to maintain your furnace could cause the unit to accumulate dirt and debris. The buildup from your air filter can eventually reach the blower motor and cause it to overheat and burn out.
