Changing the HVAC filters is an important part of HVAC system care and maintenance. Neglecting to do so can reduce HVAC efficiency as well as affect your indoor air quality. Amber shares a look at what happens when you don’t change your heating and air conditioning filters.
Most homes today have combined heating, cooling, and ventilation systems, all of which has some type of air filter that traps airborne particles. Dirty air filters can result in a pressure drop within the HVAC system. Much like a clogged sink, clogged air filters won’t allow as much air through as a clean one would. Higher output will then be required from the heating and cooling systems to compensate for the reduced output, which can result in higher energy bills.
Neglected air filters won’t be as efficient in trapping indoor air pollutants, such as mold spores and other particulates. Some of these particles may recirculate and get trapped within the air ducts. The same particles may also enter the HVAC system and clog sensitive machinery.
You should perform HVAC maintenance at least twice a year, before and after you switch between cooling and heating systems. Air filters that came with HVAC systems can be easily cleaned, which should be done when you perform other HVAC maintenance tasks. Air filters tend to get filled faster during months of heavy use, so check your filters once a month and clean it as necessary.
You should also consider upgrading the air filters, especially if they tend to get full quickly. Options like pleated air filters and electrostatic filters are available and can be installed on existing HVAC systems. Your HVAC technician can help you choose the replacement air filter that works best with your HVAC system.
