Not all HVAC contractors perform HVAC commissioning, the testing phase that immediately follows — or should follow — the installation process. In today’s post, Amber Air Conditioning Inc. explains why this is an important step that your air conditioning contractor should take right after installing your new HVAC system.
HVAC systems aren’t exactly plug-and-play like many other home appliances are. While it’s possible to get your heating and air conditioning systems up and running without commissioning, you probably won’t get the most out of them. Uncommissioned HVAC systems are more at risk of premature breakdowns, increased energy bills and a generally uncomfortable home.
An air conditioning technician begins HVAC commissioning with a thorough inspection right after installation. This helps ensure that the installation meets the manufacturer’s requirements. The HVAC system will then undergo “witnessing,” which involves a test startup and shutdown intended to ensure the system turns on and off the way it’s supposed to.
The rest of the system will then undergo testing using tools that measure output and ambient temperature. Refrigerant piping and electrical connections will be tested for leaks and energy fluctuations. Other metrics such as how fast the HVAC system cools or heats the room will also be measured.
Commissioning helps make certain your HVAC system is properly calibrated to your home’s unique heating and cooling requirements. It also aids in determining your HVAC system’s optimal settings, which eliminates having to guess or “feel” the right combination of fan speed and temperature. Having the wrong settings — as is usually the case with un-commissioned HVAC systems — can cause the system to either redline all the time to meet your home’s heating and cooling requirements, or make it start and stop too often, resulting in uneven indoor temperatures. Ultimately, a commissioned HVAC system can help you save on energy bills and prolong its service life.
