The Hallmarks of a Good HVAC Maintenance Checklist

Keeping your HVAC system in good condition is the key to ensuring their longevity and efficiency. It all starts with a detailed HVAC maintenance checklist. Amber Air Conditioning Inc. explains in this blog post what it should look like.

Why Invest in HVAC Maintenance

Having your HVAC system inspected and maintained by a trusted local HVAC contractor is a wise decision for many reasons. Apart from keeping it in top shape, you’re also avoiding future problems from occurring, resulting in fewer repairs and ensuring your equipment lasts for as long as possible. Plus, a well-maintained heater or air conditioner promotes better indoor air quality at home, allowing you and your household to breathe cleaner air.

Creating Separate HVAC Maintenance Checklists

Your HVAC maintenance checklist can be divided into two: one that contains tasks that you can do yourself and another that would require the skills of heating and air conditioning repair technicians. Tasks you can do yourself include:

  • Clearing dirt and debris that have accumulated around the HVAC system’s outdoor unit.
  • Trimming away foliage growing near the outdoor unit, leaving at least 18 inches of space between the two.
  • Keeping the supply and return registers open and clear of any obstructions.
  • Checking the filter for dirt and promptly cleaning or replacing them at least once or thrice a month depending on the HVAC usage.

Meanwhile, tasks that are best left in the hands of the professionals include, but are not limited to:

  • Making sure the electrical connections are secured.
  • Checking refrigerant levels (air conditioners and heat pumps)
  • Evaluating the safety features of the furnace, like the limit switch and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Examining the wear, tension and alignment of the blower belt
  • Getting rid of debris from the coils
