Is It Okay to Run Your HVAC Unit Without a Filter?

Air filters are an essential component of heating and cooling equipment. These parts are responsible for trapping dust, dirt, allergens and other contaminants and preventing them from recirculating indoors. However, some homeowners still wonder whether it’s safe to run the furnace or air conditioner without a filter. The simple answer is no. Here our experts at Amber HVAC discuss the risks of running HVAC units without a filter.

  • Air quality problems. A prevalent problem that homeowners often encounter when running their HVAC units without a filter is decreased air quality. Without an air filter in place, the air conditioner will draw in filthy air and redistribute it air back into the living space. Not only will this cause dust and debris to settle on furniture, it will also make breathing difficult due to the dirty air.
  • Condensation drain problems. Without a proper filter, the condensation drain won’t effectively drain the moisture from the air conditioning unit, leading to condensation buildup in the Freon tubing. According to the experts at Amber AC, water droplets from the condensation will then start dripping down the pan, resulting in water-related damage to the entire HVAC system.
  • Ductwork problems. An HVAC unit operating without a filter enables dirt to escape from the Freon tubes, travel all the way to the air ducts and get trapped in the aluminum tubes. This causes dampness to build up, which will then encourage the growth of mold inside the ductwork system. Breathing in indoor air that’s riddled with mold spores will certainly cause the residents to experience all sorts of health and respiratory problems.
