How to Reduce Dust in Your Home

Dust can be found everywhere, even in the cleanest of homes. Without regular cleaning, dust can be a nuisance – and can also affect your home’s indoor air quality. In today’s post, local heating and air conditioning company Amber Air Conditioning Inc. shares a quick guide to reducing dust in your home.

Where Does Dust Come From?

Dust inside the house comes from various sources that ultimately add up: dirt, dead skin cells, hair and fabric fibers. Airborne particles like ash, soot and vehicle exhaust can also contribute to it. For some people, the constant presence of dust can be more than a chore  – particles in the dust can also trigger allergies, asthma and other respiratory issues.

How to Reduce Dust in Your Home

Regularly dusting and vacuuming may not be enough. The following are some of the things that you can do that can help reduce dust and maintain good indoor air quality.

  • Keep the windows closed. If your home happens to be near unpaved roads or dry patches of land, you’ll want to keep your windows closed most of the time. If you need to open them for ventilation, try to limit it to 15 minutes a day, maximum.
  • Install doormats. Every time someone comes in from the outside, they track dirt into the house. Install interior and exterior doormats, preferably with bristle tops, to help keep dirt away from your indoor spaces. You can also adopt a Japanese-style entry where shoes are kept at the vestibule and wear sandals are worn in the living areas.
  • Run an air purifier. An air purifier scrubs the air and filters out dust, pollen and other indoor air pollutants. It can be a standalone unit or installed as part of a house’s HVAC system, and is ideal if you must have your windows closed most of the time.
  • Replace your air filters. Your HVAC system’s air filters trap dust and other particles and generally fill to capacity every one to three months. Replacing them when full can help prevent dust from circulating indoors. HVAC air filters are designed to be user-replaceable and don’t require you to schedule an appointment with an HVAC technician to get them replaced.
