How to Find the Right Size of Air Conditioner for a Room

Finding the right size air conditioner for your home’s heating and cooling needs is all about finding a system that is not too big, but also not too small. Let our experts at Amber Air Conditioning Inc. walk you through the process of sizing your air conditioner that makes your home feel just right.

Why Do It?

At Amber Air Conditioning Inc., we pride ourselves on our ability to find the right cooling solution for  our clients’ needs. Getting the properly sized unit will help you achieve a balance between peak energy efficiency and optimum cooling ability. A unit that’s too small will not adequately cool an area while something that’s too big will consume more electricity with very little effect.

The Amber Air Conditioning Inc. Formula

The Amber Air Conditioning Inc. Formula will give a pretty accurate estimate of a home’s cooling needs. Follow along and see how our method is fairly simple.

First, you’ll need the area of the room you are trying to cool. To calculate the area, measure the length and the width of the room and multiply them together. For example, a 20 foot long and 15 foot wide room will have an area of 300 square feet. Once you have the area, multiply it by 25. Whatever area your room has, always multiply it by 25. In our example, this will give us 7500. We’ll give that final answer a unit called BTU or British Thermal Unit. That means we have a room requirement of 7500 BTU.

Close Estimates

Now that you know how many BTUs your unit would need, finding the right AC unit is as simple as looking at the capacity of different models. This cooling capacity is measured in BTU as well, and you want to find a unit that is only slightly larger than your needs.
