5 Signs Your Heat Pump Needs To Be Serviced

Heat pumps need love and care like any other kind of heating system. If you’re using a new heat pump, it only makes sense to “feel” when it is due for a service appointment. In today’s post, your local HVAC contractors at Amber AC share the signs that your heat pump needs to be serviced by a professional.

  1. Increased Energy Bills. If your energy bills appear to be creeping up without a change in your usage habits, your heat pump may not be operating as efficiently as before. Factors like  refrigerant leaks, dirty filters or system malfunctions can lead to increased energy consumption.
  2. Inconsistent Heating or Cooling. Uneven indoor temperatures could indicate that your heat pump may be struggling. Causes can range from improper installation to clogged filters, or even leaks in the ductwork. Regular maintenance — including air duct inspections every five years or so — is crucial to ensure consistent comfort and indoor air quality.
  3. Unusual Noises. Heat pumps are designed to operate quietly. If you start hearing grinding, rattling, squealing or other unusual sounds from your system, don’t ignore them. These noises can indicate problems from loose components to a failing compressor. Schedule an appointment with your HVAC technician, as keeping your heat pump running with such noises may lead to bigger problems.
  4. Frequent Cycling. Heat pumps that cycle on and off frequently are generally due to an oversized unit, but may also be indicative of a malfunctioning thermostat. The former means the heat pump is heating the room too quickly, while the latter means the thermostat is misreading the room’s actual temperature. In either case, frequency cycling puts additional strain on your heat pump, leading to increased wear and tear and energy consumption.
  5. Water Leaking Indoors. HVAC systems collect moisture from the indoors and expel it through tubing that leads to your house’s drainage system. If the water flows back into the indoor unit, it means part of the HVAC drain may be clogged. To avoid flooding water into your home, turn off your heat pump and schedule an appointment with Amber HVAC.
