3 Common HVAC Issues (and How to Prevent Them)

No matter the time of year, it is the responsibility of every homeowner to ensure their HVAC systems are in good working order. This means understanding the issues that can compromise their performance and how to prevent them. The trusted heating and air conditioning experts at Amber Air Conditioning Inc. explains some of the most common below.

1. Dirty Filters

Your HVAC’s filters catch dust and other indoor pollutants to keep the air clean. However, they can get filled to capacity, compromising airflow and causing clogs in the system’s indoor air handler. Dirty filters might be the most common HVAC issue, it is also the simplest to deal with. All it takes is to check it every one to three months. Also, you don’t have to set an appointment with an HVAC technician; you can easily clean or replace the air filters as soon as they get filled with dirt and debris.

2. Refrigerant Leaks

The refrigerant is crucial to the ongoing function of your air conditioning unit. Unfortunately, an issue within the system could cause it to leak out. This, in turn, leads to lower output and higher workload on the unit. If not addressed promptly, failure in one of the components, particularly the compressor, can occur. When this happens, the system can’t provide optimal cooling in your home due to frequent shutdowns. If you notice gurgling sounds from within the AC and the unit itself isn’t cooling as usual, turn it off and get in touch with your technician right away.

3. Ductwork Problems

The ductwork is responsible for distributing warm or cool air coming from your HVAC system to different areas of your home. However, it can suffer from a wide range of issues, from leaks to dust accumulation. These can lead to inefficient heating and cooling, which is why it is imperative that you have the ducts serviced. Duct cleaning can be scheduled once every five years. It can also include sealing if the professionals find gaps or cracks in the duct joints.
