Here is a quick crash course in HVAC systems.
Heating & Air Conditioning 101
Different houses have different heating and cooling needs. It is important that you choose your comfort systems to suit your home and your lifestyle as carefully as you choose your carpet and drapes. There are four basic configurations. A split system has a unit inside and a unit outside the house, of which one is a furnace with a fan to provide heating and circulate air. The fan is used year round. The evaporator coil is the indoor component of the system’s outdoor cooling unit. The air conditioner or heat pump works with the evaporator coil while the air ducts carry all the conditioned air throughout the house. There is a thermostat or some kind of control that is the interface for running the system and optional air quality accessories than humidify, clean and freshen air before circulating it through the ducts. Some few consist only of an outdoor unit with a fan coil inside the house, usually with a different heat source such as a baseboard heater or a boiler. The new high efficiency units are required by the government to have a minimum SEER rating (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) of 13.0. The higher the SEER rating, the more energy efficient the system is and the more it will save you on your utility bills. The highest rating is 21.
A Hybrid Heat® split system is an energy-efficient twist on the split-system because it used a gas furnace paired with an energy efficient electric heat pump for providing warm air that also takes the place of the air conditioner. In the South, pair a high efficiency heat pump with a lower cost furnace that is available for those few really cold nights and take advantage of the heat pump for the rest of the year. Choose units that have a variable speed compressor and blower to draw humidity from the air. High efficiency heat pumps today are required to have a HSPF rating (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) of a minimum 6.8 with the highest being 9.5.
Packaged systems are used where there is no internal space for a coil or furnace. They general look the same but do very different things: cool only as an a/c; heat and cool as an electric heat pump; heat and cool as Hybrid Heat® dual fuel system of electric heat pump with a gas furnace; and cool and heat with the same systems but not Hybrid Heat®. Ductless split systems are designed for rooms that do not have any existing ductwork in place for air circulation.
